Mbooni Water and Sanitation Company MBONWASCO) is a private company limited by
shares and Incorporated on March 8, 2012 as a legal company under the Company’s
Act Cap 486 law of Kenya as a public limited company guaranteed by the
Government of Kenya with no shareholding but with stakeholders. This was as a
result of enactment of water Act 2002 which ushered in the reforms in the water
sector. The Company was formed by County Council of Makueni with two
shareholders, each with one share, holding the shares as trustees for the people
of Makueni but not on their own capacity. The ownership and shareholding of the
Company has been transferred to the Government of Makueni County and the Company
issued with CR12.
The Chief Officer Water, Sanitation and Sanitation and Chief Officer Finance
were appointed directors of Mbonwasco. The two (2) appointed County directors
together with the three (3) (one appointed member has since resigned) recruited
Board members are responsible for the general policy and strategic direction of
the Company. The company main office is located at Mbumbuni Water office. The
proposed office in Tawa is yet to be constructed.
MBONWASCO has seven (7) water sources and a bore hole that is not operational
due to low yield and vandalism. The seven water sources include: Mbumbuni,
Mukundi, Mulima, Kalawa borehole, Kyaani borehole, Kakuli borehole and Kwa Nzili
borehole.
The company production ranges between 80-200m3/day of water from the water
sources.. The company mandated to supply water to approximately 141,361 in its
service area. MBONWASCO has a total of 1,678 registered connections,
The company’s mandate is to supply water to areas of Tulimani ward, Kisau/Kiteta
ward, Kako/Waia ward, Kithungo/Kitundu ward, Mbooni Ward and Kalawa Ward with a
combined population of 141,361
